Get to know Jamie Meyer, healer, teacher, author, and owner of Drumming the Soul Awake.

When beginning a new relationship with a healer or shamanic practitioner, it makes sense that you want to know the person behind the practice.

I don't call myself a shaman. The term is a bit loaded with cultural appropriation and a fair amount of fantasy. The common term is "Shamanic Practitioner." To be honest, that term is a little dry for me, although I use it. I just think of myself as a "worker."  I like the simplicity and hardiness of that word, and it points to working with Spirit as well as being worked by Spirit.

Here's What I Am

  • A shamanic practitioner with 30+ years of shamanic study, intensive work with the spirits, and practice with a variety of teachers from several cultures.
  • An author who has published Drumming the Soul Awake (1999), Healing with Shamanism: Practices and Traditions to Restore and Balance the Self (2020), 15 plays produced in various cities across the the USA, and innumerable articles.
  • A former playwright, director, improvisational street theater performer, and (not all that good) magician with a Masters’ Degree in Theology and the Arts from United Seminary of the Twin Cities (1998).
  • President of the board of directors for the International Society for Shamanic Practice.
  • Leader of drumming circles and ceremonial events around Minneapolis-St. Paul for 20 years,  including the annual Winter Solstice Blessing event, attended by hundreds of people each year.

Yes, my background is eclectic, and I am honored to fulfill the role of shamanic healer and teacher for my clients. Taking on this role was something I did not choose but rather was compelled to do. It took me 27 years of study and practice in drum circles before I formally started working with clients in 2011.

My Lineage, Teachers, and Influence

My healing and teaching work draws on decades of practice with healers and teachers, including:

Their background is grounded in Huichol (Mexico) and Shipibo (South America) practice as well as cross-cultural indigenous practice, esoteric study, psychology, and other energy healing practices. I've taken many workshops of varying lenght, graduated from their year-long training program,  and have also gone through their Shamanic Practitioners' Training.

  • Since 2015: Twelve trips to Peru to study with a family with Shipibo healers in the Amazon jungle

The core of my study in Peru has been a series of plant dietas - a seven-day process of fasting from food and water for most of the day and ingesting a single plant with properties that build power, strength, and other abilities. From this stream of study, I'll bring you the potent tradition of singing healing prayers into the body (icaros), working with plant teachers, and practices such as using rattles, bones, and feathers as tools for prayer and healing.

  • Also in Peru, Don Fernando Silva in Cusco

He is a respected Hampicamayoc (plant master) with over 30 years of experience, specializing in Peruvian plant medicine and healing ceremonies. As an Altamasayok (a high order of mystic), he has a special direct connection with the Apus (mountain spirits) of the beloved Andean mountains and its sacred places. He has taught me a great deal about working with the mountains and the web of energy in the land. I've also learned from him about making offrendas - a beautiful way to make prayers for healing and power.

  • A two-year Celtic shamanism training program with Tom Cowan and many other workshops and conversations with him over 15 years augmented by 25 years of reading and practice.

My teaching often includes working with Celtic stories and healing techniques, such as the Old Bone Mother/Cailleach (the spirit of autumn-winter and dark transformations), Brigid (the Goddess of Springtime, healing, and poetry), the Faery realm and the three cauldrons of the body (energy work), Celtic wisdom sayings and poetry, and Gaelic prayers and healing songs. I try to ground as much of myself as I can in my own ethnic indigenous tradition.

  • Several teachers from the Foundation for Shamanic Studies

This study has included Soul Retrieval with Sandra Ingerman and working with the Reindeer Spirit with Ailo Gaup (Sami/Norwegian). I am also well-schooled in the shamanic journey, which I frequently use in teaching and other work.

This provided rigorous academic training that honed my powers of discernment and gave me a valuable understanding the underlying theological influences on each and every person born in the western world. This stream brings rational, academic, philosophical, theological, and historical substance to my work.

  • Many years as a writer (printed bookPDF bookBlog & Healing with Shamanism) and playwright taught me to be boldly imaginative, take risks, and trust in uncertainty, process, doubt, and difficulty—to revel in imagination as a sacred and blessed force and to get past the negative voices and "just do the work."

  • 20+ years conducting monthly drumming circles, and each one has been a training ground for me with whatever skills my helping spirits are cajoling me to learn at the time.

In total, I meld years of being trained by the spirits, Celtic shamanism (my ancestral lineage), the tradition of medicinal plants and ritual singing from the Peruvian jungle, and various influences of poetry, art, music, storytelling, and theology. And I continue to study.

Enough About Me - You Belong Here

Throughout my years of training and practice, I have found that Spirit takes you where you need to be. You belong here, in this body, in this disastrous magnificence that we call the world. You longed to be here and now you are here. You are not alone, because Spirit is always weaving the new fabric of your heart, and placing offerings in the temple of your senses.

If you are ready to move forward in your spiritual journey, I would be honored to work with you. Schedule an in-person, phone, or online shamanic healing session, take a class, or join me for an upcoming drumming circle!
