The rattle has its own immense and nuanced powers for your practice. The rattle is is a tool for journeying to the other world, for seeing energies, for gathering power, for cleansing, and for protection. It may be your lifelong friend and teacher.
You will build a rattle out of animal skin (likely deer hide, but others may be available). We will do a great deal of ceremony to all the spirits involved in this process (all the elements and directions, animals and plants, nature spirits and the Creator). You will ceremonially infuse your rattle with power, love, and purpose.
On Friday night we create the rattle-making shrine, sing songs and ask for permission and skill to build our rattles. We humble ourselves to the power of the animal, water, air and earth that will shape the rattle. We cut the shapes, sew the rattles, fill them with dry sand and let them dry overnight on the shrine.
Saturday we put in the sound and power (beads, rocks, seeds, prayers, breath, song, and whatever else needs to go in) and we attach the handles.
You will make a basic rattle in this workshop. There are a thousand ways to then personalize and beautify your rattle. I'll offer you some ideas after you register, but you'll want to think about it, and bring materials if you want to customize your rattle.
I'll supply you with a wooden stick as a handle, or your may bring your own handle. If you would like to have a simple deer antler or deer bone as a handle, I can supply it for $20 more, which you man pay in cash at the workshop. Please use the drop down menu with the "Buy Now" button to let me know what you want.
You can make a two-sided rattle (most common, like the ones above) or a Celtic three-sided rattle (example at left). The rattle can be rounded, or an abstract shape. If you prefer a rattle made from hide other than deer ask me - it may be available, likely for about $20 extra charge. Examples include Buffalo, Elk, and Cowhide.
