Welcome to the coolest, most nuanced drumming there is on earth! Welcome to the ancient drum that the priestesses played for the Great Goddess. Welcome to the drum that can shake the rafters when played in a group, and when played low and soft, can generate the trance of of the desert full moon, the in-between trance of the shadows of consciousness, the drum that makes the spirits swoon with delight. Love, love, love the frame drum!

The Wonderful Frame Drum
This eight-week (every other Tuesday for 14 weeks) will introduce you the five basic fingering techniques in frame drum strokes: Deep Dum, High Tak, Finger Snap, Slap ("Pah") and the oceanic "Shah" sound found in Arabic and Indian drumming. If you are lucky and blissfully obedient students who practice hard between classes, you may also be introduced to the secret, super-subtle ecstasy-inducing strokes such as the “Nudge of the Gods,” the “Ninja Hiccup" and the ultimate stroke, Hummingbird-Whale song. Okay I made up those names, but they are real sounds.
You will learn these basic strokes, and we will learn some easy rhythms (sure, they’re easy, but they’ll still drive you into a wild place after only three minutes). You will also learn to play in the absurdly trancey rhythm known as 7-Heaven.
One goal of this class is to practice a trace-inducing piece that the ensemble will perform at the 13th annual Winter Solstice Blessing in December, accompanied by ritual singers. This three-night holiday event draws about 150 people per night and is great fun as well as being a beautiful spiritual experience. It has been a dream of mine for, well, 13 years, to have a frame drum ensemble as part of the event. We can talk about this after the class gets started. I can't guarantee this outcome, because it depends on each student's willingness to perform and practice. But wouldn't it be cool?
Deadline for registration: August 31.
Please commit to practicing at least 15 minutes day.
Here is where we are going:
Will our group be as cool as these women? Yes.
